In episode #17 of the Yale Schwarzman Center (YSC) web series, One, sound designer Daniela Hart (YSD'21) talks with interviewer Taiga Christie (YSPH'20) about her journey as a director, producer, and sound designer. After working in the sound department of a video game company, Hart has delved into designing for film, theater, dance, and other art forms. In response to COVID-19, she worked with her business partner to produce Pandemic Voices, a series of choreographed performances highlighting the experience of healthcare professionals. This episode of One includes several excerpts from Pandemic Voices.

Hart is also working with the YSC and Yale Dance Lab as a student sound designer for Transpositions, a program premiering this spring that will feature 16 renowned choreographers and a troupe of dancers from across the Yale community performing a series of digital dance poems.

Christie, the host of episode #17, is a theater artist and health worker who completed her MPH degree at the Yale School of Public Health in 2019. Christie holds a joint fellowship with YSPH and the Yale Schwarzman Center and studies links between the arts and public health as part of the Humanities, Arts and Public Health Practice at Yale Initiative, also known as the HAPPY Initiative.

Doing things that haven’t been done before in sound design is hard to do, but is definitely a goal….because how do you orchestrate on instruments that have never been written for before?

One, a web series produced by the Yale Schwarzman Center (YSC), highlights interdisciplinary approaches to the arts in relation to the YSC’s values of collaboration, wellness and belonging. The inaugural season illuminates the creative and academic merits of student works impacted by physical distance and explores perspectives on community-building among dispersed groups.  The series title, One, is a nod to the YSC’s aspiration to advance a sense of “One Yale” and create an interconnected community that builds new traditions of student engagement around the campus and into the world.
