South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and his trio appeared at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven in partnership with Yale Schwarzman Center in mid November in a quiet, almost elegiac evening.
Ibrahim, who turned 90 in October, is still a wonder. In solo piano moments, he moved from melodic themes—church hymns, song from his canon—to trains of extended musical thought, bending notes, modulating, adding subtle shades of color. His strident delivery resonated in the Shubert auditorium.
