One of the most celebrated Odissi performers, teachers, choreographers, and scholars of her generation, Bijayini Satpathy spent nearly three decades as a principal dancer and Director of Training and Outreach at Nrityagram, one of India’s foremost dance institutions. Her artistic work has been recognized globally through prestigious appointments including Artist-in-Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and Fellow at the Center for Ballet and the Arts, New York University. She also served as the Alma Hawkins Visiting Chair at UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance.

Her performances are precise, deeply spiritual, and achingly beautiful — rooted in a classical tradition that is thousands of years old and somehow completely alive in her hands
