Yale faculty member and renowned dancer and choreographer Emily Coates presents her new work Tell Me Where It Comes From, sourcing from George Balanchine's early archives scattered throughout New England.

Drawing on her background as a former member of New York City Ballet, Coates creates an unexpected portrait of Balanchine's legacy, working with collaborators Ain Gordon, Derek Lucci, Charles Burnham, Melvin Chen, Krista Smith, Harriet Jung and Reid Bartelme, and Henry Seth to collage far-flung remains: unanswered letters, old photographs and music exercises, lost ballets, early muses, and more.

The project was commissioned by Works & Process to a sold-out premiere at Guggenheim New York.

"I’m very interested in archives and performance and how they seem to contradict each other...That contradiction is, to me, creatively generative."
Emily Coats in conversation with Chava Pearl Lansky for Dance Magazine
